VASA: Connecting individuals and communities on a global scale who have interest in media studies, art, photography and digital media arts. Transmedia is a VASA project.
I’ve been traveling around Central America for the past 7 years and it’s become very evident to me that there’s a vibrant, thriving and passionate photographic community throughout the region. I’ve also had the pleasure to participate in some photo excursions and exhibitions with some of these excellent photographers from El Salvador and Guatemala. I was honored when Stefan Rivera the leader of this years Photowalk in Central America asked me to judge this years photographs.
I must admit, I was very impressed with the photographs submitted for judging. They truly captured a day in the life of Antigua. The pictures were beautifully composed, highly expressive with visual impact.
According to Photo walk Antigua coordinator and leader Stefan Rivera , “The Scott’s Kelby Worldwide Photowalk is the biggest social photography event where photographers get together (usually in a downtown area or historic section of town) to walk around, shoot photos, and generally have fun and share the passion for making pictures with other photographers.”
This year’s Photo Walk event took place on October 11 and had over 1052 photo walks and 20152 walkers around the world!!!
It is completely free to participate in the walk, but this year Central American photographers were “Walking with a Purpose” by encouraging all participants to donate as little as $1 to the Springs of Hope Orphanage in Kenya.
The photography group “Comunidad del lente” in El Salvador organized their walk on the declared day by the UNESCO “Heritage of Humanity” and traveled to Antigua, Guatemala. Antigua is the first capital of Central America and is rich in culture, tradition and history. This historic city with cobble stone streets and Mayan/Spanish flavor showcases the legacy inherited during the Spanish conquest.
Architectural monuments, churches, convents and monasteries display a rich cultural, architectural and living heritage. This unique location provided a unique photographic experience for the 27 photography walkers from El Salvador, Guatemala and United States.
The walk started at 4:00pm and finished around 6:45pm with a debrief meeting to share experiences and coffee between the walkers!
The event was sponsored by Kelbyone, Adobe, Flickr, KeepSnap, Peachpit, Wacom, Tamron and B&H. Therefore there were a lot of prizes for the best pictures. One of the winning photo walkers will win a full year membership to Kelby One (a $249.00 value).
Photowalks are a great creative experience for sharing the passion for photography with others photography enthusiasts around the world.
